Our Story

Our story is wildly romantic and begins in 1974 when we met at Eisaman Johns and Laws Advertising where we both worked, JL's first job out of college and David's 2nd. We were instantly attracted to each other and dated briefly until JL had a change of heart and dumped David for greener pastures.

Our friendship survived and David even attended JL's wedding some years later. Jean-Louise left EJL for CRI then BBDO (must be an initial thing) David followed her to CRI in Costa Mesa, making the big move behind the Orange Curtain from Hollywood. We worked together for several years and kept in touch even after JL moved back to West LA with BBDO.

JL moved to Tucson, Arizona with her husband and she and David lost touch for 17 years until...

David was working in Scottsdale in August, 1999 and remembering that JL lived somewhere in Arizona, did a search for her on Four-11.com (now Yahoo People)

Even though she has an unlisted number she turned up in the search and we connected. We talked about times old and new for a couple of hours and agreed to get together before David left Scottsdale.

On the last day of David's job, Jean-Louise drove across the state from Pinetop to Scottsdale and they met at her sister Susan's home for a family dinner and a drink alone afterward. This became Chapter One of Jean-Louise and David's Excellent Adventure!

Through email and ma bell our friendship grew and turned into a relationship, albeit a long distance one.

“For some reason I've been thinking about you all day. To the point of distraction even. What's up? Are you thinking about me too? I can hardly concentrate on this incredibly uninteresting and unexciting 2000 budget I'm doing (barf). Usually I'm able to rise above the subject matter and get through this stuff. Help.”

“Yes I've been thinking about you all day too. I haven't had to do any serious work so it's been easy to just drift along and do what I'm doing here. I've gone through all kinds of fantasies and scenarios and possibilities. I didn't come in until after noon partially because like a fool I was up until almost 5AM (you figured prominently in that too)”

After a month of communicating and discovering that we belonged together we scheduled Chapter Two, a face to face long weekend in Tucson.

Thanks to Shuttle by United and Karen Jettenberg for bending a few rules, David flew first-class into Jean-Louise's arms for a storybook weekend of discovery and love including a party in their honor at Barbara Chapman's.
